In the heart of Uttar Pradesh, on 2 November 1956, a boy named Shiv Narain Kureel was born with a quiet determination that would one day reshape the lives of countless children. From the corridors of King George’s Medical University in Lucknow he rose to become Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery—a position from which he would change the way the world treated some of the most complex congenital defects.

Where many surgeons preferred multiple operations spread over years, Shiv Narain sought a better way. He developed single-stage surgical techniques for severe conditions such as bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex—the rare birth defect in which the bladder and urethra form outside the body. His innovative midline approach preserved nerves, lengthened the penis, and restored continence in a single carefully planned operation. The results were remarkable: children who once faced lifelong leakage and multiple surgeries began to live near-normal lives.

He performed India’s first paediatric vaginal reconstructive surgery using oral mucosa grafting on an 11-year-old girl, and corrected bladder exstrophy in toddlers with techniques that later found their way into international textbooks. His research on anatomical details of these rare anomalies was published in leading journals and taught to surgeons across the country and abroad.

One evening, after a long and delicate reconstruction, a young father stood outside the operating theatre, eyes filled with hope and fear. “Doctor,” he asked, “will my child ever be able to play without shame?”

Kureel placed a steady hand on the man’s shoulder. “We have given your child the anatomy nature intended. The rest—running, laughing, living—will come from the strength already inside him.”

He served as President of the Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons, trained generations of young doctors, and published extensively. In 2016 the nation recognised his pioneering work with the Padma Shri.

Today, as one of India’s foremost paediatric reconstructive surgeons, Dr. Shiv Narain Kureel continues to operate, teach and innovate at King George’s Medical University. From a young surgeon in Lucknow to a Padma Shri awardee whose single-stage techniques have given dignity and normalcy to children born with the rarest of challenges, his journey remains a powerful reminder that the most profound healing often begins with the courage to do in one operation what others spread across years.
