Sudhir Vadilal Shah

In the vibrant state of Gujarat, on 19 August 1959, a boy named Sudhir Vadilal Shah was born with a mind drawn equally to science and the deeper questions of life. He studied medicine in Ahmedabad, earning his MD in 1984, then specialised in neurology with a DM from Mumbai in 1990. Fellowships in stroke at Houston and movement disorders at Queen Square, London, refined the precision of his clinical eye.

Returning home, he joined Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad, rising to become Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology. He introduced the state’s first DM and DNB programmes in neurology, brought advanced treatments such as thrombolysis for stroke and deep-brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease to Gujarat, and built a department that trained a generation of neurologists. As Director of Neurosciences at Sterling Hospitals and Honorary Neurologist to the Governor of Gujarat, he combined cutting-edge care with quiet compassion.

Yet his curiosity stretched beyond the clinic. He wrote books that made the mysteries of the brain accessible to ordinary people—Diseases of the Brain and Nervous System, The Art and Science of Meditation, Journey to Happiness and Peace, and works exploring Jainism as a living science. More than 50,000 copies sold; every royalty went to charity. His research on prolonged fasting and meditation drew international attention, featuring in documentaries and interviews with the BBC and Discovery Channel.

One evening a patient, newly recovered from a stroke, asked him, “Doctor, how do you keep both science and spirit so close?”

Sudhir smiled. “The brain is the most complex organ we know. But the peace that heals it often comes from something even deeper. Medicine treats the body; understanding treats the person.”

In 2016 the President of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri. Later came the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award for eminent medical teaching, fellowships from the Indian Academy of Neurology, the Royal College of Physicians and the American Academy of Neurology.

Today, as one of Gujarat’s most respected neurologists, teacher and writer, Dr. Sudhir V. Shah continues to heal minds, educate the public and explore the meeting place of science and spirituality. From a young doctor in Ahmedabad to a Padma Shri awardee who gave both knowledge and compassion, his journey remains a luminous reminder that the finest medicine treats not only the nervous system, but the whole human being.
