The Teacher-Physician of Bihar

Born in Bihar, Shyam Narayan Arya graduated with honours and a gold medal in MBBS from Patna Medical College and Hospital, later completing his MD in Medicine from the same institution. He went on to earn prestigious international qualifications—MRCP from Edinburgh and Glasgow, and FRCP from London, Edinburgh and Glasgow—along with fellowships of the Indian College of Physicians and the Indian Association of Clinical Medicine.

He served as Professor of Medicine at Patna Medical College and rose to national leadership as National Professor and Dean of the College of General Practitioners of the Indian Medical Association. He also held the office of National President of the Indian Association of Clinical Medicine. A prolific writer and educator, he published numerous papers and monographs, contributed chapters to medical textbooks, and delivered keynote addresses at conferences across the country, shaping the practice of clinical medicine and general practice for generations of doctors.

His lifelong dedication to teaching and patient care earned him the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award—the highest honour in the Indian medical profession—in 1998. In 2008 the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri upon him for his contributions to medicine.

Today, the influence of Padma Shri Dr. Shyam Narayan Arya continues through the many physicians he trained and the standards of clinical excellence he helped establish in Bihar and beyond—quiet scholarship, steadfast service, and an unwavering commitment to the art and science of healing.
