The Master of Bone and Limb

Born in the village of Mirpur near Rewari in Haryana, Surender Singh Yadav received his early education locally before graduating MBBS from SMS Medical College, Jaipur, in 1960. He completed his MS in Orthopaedics from Delhi University in 1966 and entered the Central Health Services, dedicating more than three decades to teaching and clinical practice.

He rose to become Director-Professor and Head of Orthopaedic Surgery at Maulana Azad Medical College and Lok Nayak Hospital, New Delhi, a position he held for over twenty-five years. Later he served as the first Director of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and Director of Medical Education for Haryana. His original research focused on cost-effective orthopaedic techniques—especially non-vascularised fibular grafting for bone defects, limb-lengthening procedures, and the management of bone tumours and congenital deformities. He published more than 160 papers in leading national and international journals and trained generations of orthopaedic surgeons.

In recognition of his contributions the Medical Council of India awarded him the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award as “Eminent Medical Man” in 1995. In 2008 the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri upon him. He later received an honorary D.Litt. from the Health University, Raipur.

Today, the techniques he refined and the many surgeons he mentored continue to restore mobility and dignity to patients across India. In operating theatres and classrooms alike, the legacy of Padma Shri Prof. Surender Singh Yadav endures—practical innovation, tireless teaching, and a lifelong commitment to healing the bones and limbs of those in need.
