The Glaucoma Specialist Who Protected Sight with Precision Lasers: The Story of Dr. Harsh Kumar

In the busy clinics of New Delhi, where patients arrive fearing the silent thief of sight, Dr. Harsh Kumar has spent decades standing between glaucoma and irreversible blindness. An ophthalmologist of quiet excellence, he is known for refining laser techniques that offer hope when the pressure inside the eye threatens to steal vision forever.

He graduated with an MBBS from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and completed his MD in Ophthalmology at the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences—both with gold medals. He finished his senior residency with the best senior resident award and later joined the faculty at AIIMS as an additional professor in the glaucoma unit. Today he serves as Director of Glaucoma Services at Centre for Sight in New Delhi and as a consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

Dr. Kumar is credited with describing nine laser surgical procedures for glaucoma and the anterior segment of the eye. One of these techniques is cited in the authoritative Shields Textbook of Glaucoma, a recognition of its lasting value to the specialty. He has trained young ophthalmologists, mentored doctoral research, conducted workshops, and contributed to continuous medical education so that the skills of careful glaucoma management can reach more patients across the country.

In 2015 the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri for his contributions to medicine. Earlier honours include the Bodh Raj Sabharwal Medal, the A.C. Aggarwal Trophy, and several oration awards that marked his standing among peers.

One evening, after a day of laser procedures and consultations with patients whose vision hung in the balance, a young resident asked him, “Sir, glaucoma often has no early symptoms. What keeps you so focused on a disease that many people do not even know they have until it is advanced?”

Dr. Harsh Kumar answered with the steady patience of a physician who had looked into countless eyes and measured the pressure that could take away a person’s world.

“Sight is silent until it begins to fade,” he said. “Glaucoma steals slowly, without pain, until the damage is done. If careful examination and precise laser treatment can stop that theft and preserve what remains, then every procedure matters. The reward is a patient who continues to see the faces of their family. That is why we stay vigilant.”

And so the AIIMS-trained ophthalmologist who developed new laser approaches for glaucoma, who has protected the vision of countless patients in Delhi, and who received the Padma Shri for his service, continues to work at the delicate boundary between light and darkness—one carefully aimed laser at a time.
