The Hunger for Knowledge: The Story of Professor Bal Krishan Anand

In the bustling streets of Lahore in September 1917, a boy was born into a world already marked by loss. His father, Visheshar Das Anand, had passed away before little Bal Krishan ever opened his eyes. Raised by his mother Saraswati Devi with the quiet support of grandparents who themselves struggled, the child grew up knowing both hardship and fierce determination.

“Beta,” his mother would say as she helped him with his books by the light of a dim lamp, “your father’s spirit lives in your studies. Make something of it.”

And he did. Brilliant from the start, Bal Krishan excelled at Municipal Primary School and later DAV High School. He completed Intermediate Science at Government College, Lahore, then entered King Edward Medical College. In 1940 he graduated MBBS, standing second in his class. The Partition years brought upheaval, yet he persevered, earning his MD from Punjab University in 1948 with specialisation in Medicine, Pathology and Physiology.

At the young age of thirty-two, in 1949, he was appointed Professor of Physiology at Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi. Colleagues raised eyebrows. “So young for a professor?” one senior muttered. Bal Krishan simply smiled and got to work. He introduced mammalian experiments and established the country’s first proper Neurophysiology research unit.

Then came the opportunity that would change everything. In 1950 the Rockefeller Foundation awarded him a fellowship to Yale University. There, working with the renowned John Brobeck in John Fulton’s laboratory, something extraordinary happened. While studying the hypothalamus of rats, Anand and his colleagues identified a specific region that controlled hunger and feeding behaviour—the “feeding centre.”

One evening in the lab, Brobeck looked at the data and said, “Anand, this changes how we understand appetite itself.”

Bal Krishan, ever modest, replied, “Sir, the brain has been keeping secrets from us. We have only just begun to listen.”

He was offered a faculty position at Yale. He declined. “India needs this knowledge more than I need a comfortable chair,” he told a colleague. In 1952 he returned home.

At Lady Hardinge he continued his research. In 1956, when the All India Institute of Medical Sciences was born, Bal Krishan Anand became its first Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology. He was thirty-nine. Under his leadership the department became a beacon of neurophysiological research. He studied the hypothalamus’s role in food intake, emotion, reproduction, cardiovascular control, yoga, and high-altitude physiology. Over two hundred scientific papers flowed from his laboratory. He mentored generations of scientists who would carry Indian neuroscience forward.

He helped redesign the entire MBBS curriculum—three phases of three semesters each, followed by a full year of internship that included rural posting. That structure still shapes medical education across India. From 1969 to 1974 he served as Dean of AIIMS.

In 1963 the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize recognised his pioneering work. In 1969 the nation conferred upon him the Padma Shri in Medicine. When the news arrived, students and colleagues gathered around him.

“Sir, this is your moment,” a young researcher said excitedly.

Anand shook his head gently. “This is the moment of every student who stayed late in the lab, every technician who prepared the electrodes, and every rat that taught us something about ourselves. The brain is the greatest teacher. We are only its students.”

He later served with the World Health Organization, helped establish the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, and remained Emeritus Professor at AIIMS until the end. He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 1984 and was elected Fellow of the major Indian science academies.

Professor Bal Krishan Anand passed away on 2 April 2007 at the age of eighty-nine. Those who knew him still speak of the soft-spoken man who discovered one of the brain’s deepest secrets yet never sought the spotlight.

In the quiet laboratories of AIIMS and in the minds of the countless students he trained, his legacy lives on—the man who taught India how to listen to the hypothalamus, and who proved that the greatest discoveries often begin with the simplest question: Why do we feel hunger?

And so the story of Bal Krishan Anand remains—a story of a boy raised in loss who gave the world a clearer understanding of one of life’s most fundamental drives, and who built institutions so that future generations could keep asking better questions.
