First Myth
Healthcare costs are increasing in India
Infact they are coming down
In 90s a Bypass surgery would cost 3 lakh and only few centres did it
And now it costs 2.5 lakhs
Even after 25 years the price is less and it is due to fact that it is available in many places in India
Is there any such parallel thing in India where 2017 prices were less than 90s prices ??
Myth 2
Hospitals are charging more
Since there is huge market competition in healthcare, Hospitals cant charge more
But some bills like in this Aadya case look high as hospitals in India are able to provide worlds best healthcare technology and treatment which was Earlier possible only in the west
You buy any latest Technlogy in India
Whether it is a car or iphone
The prices are more or equal to USA
Only health care technology is 10-25 times lesser in India
Average cost of MRI in US is 2600 $ or 168000 rupees
In India it is 6-8000 rupees though we use same machines and in fact our radiologists are so good that US outsources MRI scans to be reported by Indian radiologists
Myth 3
Hospitals mint Money and make huge profits
Healthcare is a very price sensitive and capital intensive field
It takes 1 Cr of capital to setup a bed in Tier 1 city and 50-60 in tier 2 city
Govt doesn’t give any tax benefits any concessions for healthcare
Infact Industry and multiplex pay less rate for power than hospitals
So the margins in healthcare is very less compared to any other service industry
Myth 4
Private hospitals charge more for insurance patients
Every hosp has to give discounts on rack rate to insurance companies and TPAs
And prices of most of the procedures and charges are fixed
So hosp cant charge more for insurance patients as insurance will pay only on prior agreed terms and rates
In case of Govt Schemes PSU Central govt Police and Defence employee the prices the govt pays hosp doesn’t even cover 25-45 percent of consumables and drugs used for patients
So every patient in these categories are Subsidised by private hosp
In case of Karnataka if 1200 Cr is paid by govt under the yeshaswani scheme
Then private hosp have spent 3500 Cr for the same
So for each of these Patients private hosp spend two times more than what govt spends
This is the biggest charity done by private healthcare
Myth 5
Hospitals earn more by keeping the patients for more time
Hospitals jealously monitor ALOS (Average length of stay) and the lesser it is
The more beneficial it is for hosp
3.5 days of stay is the good ALOS
If It is more hosp lose money
So there is no benefit in keeping patients for longer
Myth 6
There is private hospital lobby which is lobbying govt to keep Govt hosp in pathetic state so that they can make money
Infact it is vice versa
Private hosp came up to fill the void left by govt hosp
If govt hosp had catered to public then private hosp wouldn’t be providing 80 % of healthcare to Indians
If there was no private health care the condition would be even worser
So the onus is on govt to provide good Public health care thorough govt hosp
Instead of correcting their hosp
If govt wants to use draconian laws on private healthcare
It will only be counter productive and affect common man
